Nametags

Nametags put a prefix and a suffix around the name above a player's head, so a rank looks the same in the world as it does in the tab list.

Configuration

yaml
nametag:
  enabled: true
  prefix: '&8[&e%vault_rank%&8] '
  suffix: '%busytab_afk%'
  name-color: white
Option Default Description
enabled true Turn nametags on or off
prefix &8[&e%vault_rank%&8] Text shown before the name
suffix %busytab_afk% Text shown after the name
name-color white Color of the name itself

With the defaults, a moderator called Steve has [moderator] Steve above their head, and [moderator] Steve [AFK] while AFK. That matches the default tablist-name-format.

prefix and suffix accept the same placeholders and formatting as the tab list, including gradients, hex colors and Nexo glyphs.

Matching your tab list

Minecraft always draws the real player name in the middle of a nametag. You can't replace it, so split your tab format around the name:

yaml
tablist-name-format: '%luckperms_prefix%&f%player_name% %luckperms_suffix%'

nametag:
  prefix: '%luckperms_prefix%'
  suffix: ' %luckperms_suffix%'
  name-color: white

Add a trailing space to the prefix or a leading space to the suffix where you want a gap.

Name color

name-color takes one of the 16 named colors:

black, dark_blue, dark_green, dark_aqua, dark_red, dark_purple, gold, gray, dark_gray, blue, green, aqua, red, light_purple, yellow, white

Hex colors and gradients aren't possible for the name itself; that is a Minecraft limit. A color at the end of prefix does not carry over to the name. An unknown value logs a warning and uses white. The same color is used for the player's glow outline.

Good to know

  • Vanilla messages show the prefix and suffix too. Death messages, advancement messages and other vanilla text that names a player use the same nametag.
  • Nametags update on the refresh-interval, when a player joins, and on /busytab reload. A rank change shows up within one interval.
  • Sneaking and invisibility behave as in vanilla. BusyTab doesn't change when a nametag is visible.
  • Nametags use the same scoreboard team as Rank Sorting. The warning there about other team plugins applies here as well.
  • Players on a custom scoreboard may not see them. Plugins that give each player their own scoreboard (some sidebar plugins) hide teams from the main scoreboard, which is where BusyTab keeps nametags.

Turning nametags off

yaml
nametag:
  enabled: false

After /busytab reload, the prefix, suffix and name color are removed from every player.
