Fishing Journal
The Fishing Journal records every fish species you've caught. Press J (rebindable, under Miscellaneous) to open it. It doesn't pause the game.
What it shows
One row per species. A species you've caught shows:
- Largest: the biggest one you've landed, in cm.
- Caught N×: how many times you've caught it.
- First caught: the date of your first one.
A species you haven't caught yet is greyed out and reads Not yet caught, so you can always see
what's left.
Tabs
The tabs along the top filter the list, and each shows your count for that group, for example
Ocean 1/2. Click a tab to filter, click it again to show everything.
| Tab | Species |
|---|---|
| General | Cod, Salmon, Tropical Fish, Pufferfish |
| Ocean | Ocean Pearl, Large Fish |
| Swamp | Algae, Catfish |
| Jungle | Exotic Fish, River Piranha |
| Legendary | Starfin Leviathan |
A species is filed under a biome only if it's found only in that biome's ripples. The four vanilla fish turn up everywhere, so they sit under General.
What counts as a catch
Only fish species are tracked. Junk and treasure (sticks, bows, enchanted books, rods and so on) never appear in the journal and don't roll a size.
A species counts the same however you catch it, as long as it comes from a ripple. Vanilla fishing in plain water doesn't record anything.
Sizes
Every catch rolls a size between the species' minimum and maximum (see
Items for the ranges). A Perfect Catch rolls
perfect_catch_size_rolls times (default 2) and keeps the biggest, so perfect catches tend to be
larger. The catch message shows the size, tagged [NEW SPECIES!] the first time and
[NEW RECORD!] when it beats your largest.
Completion
Completion is measured across the 10 species you can catch from the start: everything except the Starfin Leviathan. The Leviathan comes from Legendary ripples, which only unlock at 100%, so counting it would make 100% impossible.
Completion drives the milestone rewards at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. See Milestones & Legendary Tier.
Where it's saved
The journal is stored with each player's own data: per world in singleplayer, per player on a server. It isn't shared between players.
If a data pack or addon that added a species is removed, that species' row is kept in the save, and it comes back with its progress intact if the species returns. Fish species are data, so servers and data packs can add their own. See Custom Fish Species.
